Upon end of the studies student will receive a title: Ph.d. Intelligent Systems
PhD Study Programme Intelligent Systems aims at enabling students to achieve scientific competence and academic skills in the field of intelligent systems. Conditions of enrolment in the study programme - previously earned scope of study of at least 300 ECTS credits at the undergraduate and graduate academic studies in the field of computing, mathematics, technical sciences. Total number of ECTS per semester is 30, and for the academic year 60. The programme lasts for 3 years (6 semesters), during which a student needs to earn minimum 180 ECTS credits, including credits for the doctoral dissertation. Specifically, 90 ECTS are earned by passing course exams, 30 ECTS by passing the entry examination for doctoral dissertation (qualification paper / term paper) and 60 ECTS are earned for elaboration and defence of the PhD dissertation. Rules of studying (credits for each course is in accordance with European Credit Transfer System). Value of PhD dissertation in ECTS credits - 60 ECTS.


Goals of study program

The specific objectives of the PhD study programme Intelligent Systems are:
  1. improvement of the scientific and professional research in different fields of intelligent systems at the University of Belgrade, and also in other research organizations in which the future PhDs will work in this field
  2. achieving scientific excellence and academic skills in the interdisciplinary field of intelligent systems
  3. evelopment of creative skills in solving problems in the interdisciplinary field of the intelligent systems and skills of critical thinking
  4. deepening knowledge in different fields of intelligent systems, in accordance with modern ways of development of these systems in the world
  5. training of students to conduct original research independently and to develop new technologies in different fields of intelligent systems


Outcome of study program

Students who complete PhD studies in the study programme Intelligent Systems are competent to conduct research that includes a variety of techniques and technologies of intelligent systems, and to solve real-world problems in practice, including complex problems in new or unfamiliar environments. The acquired knowledge gives them the opportunity to work in research institutes, centers and faculties, as well as in advanced development departments of various IT firms, companies, organizations and government institutions.

General competencies of graduates from this programme include, above all, critical thinking ability, ability to analyze complex problems, synthesis of solution and prediction of the development of the selected solution, with a clear idea of what are its advantages and disadvantages. Specific competencies include the ability to solve problems that do not have a complete specification of the input parameters, in which there is no complete certainty of data and solutions, as well as those that require application of heuristic techniques.

The study programme of PhD studies Intelligent Systems also develops students' competencies such as skills and methods of research in the field of intelligent systems, adaptation of the research process with the necessary degree of academic integrity, ability to publish research papers nationally and internationally, critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas, and the promotion of such ideas to contribute to the progress of business and society as a whole. With these competencies, students are able to solve practical and theoretical problems, to organize development and scientific research, and to engage in international research projects related to the development of new technologies in the field of intelligent systems



Prerequisite for attending study program

The right of enrolment have all the candidates who have previously earned at least 300 ECTS credits at undergraduate and graduate academic studies in the fields of computing, mathematics, or technical sciences, and also candidates who have their specialized academic studies and post-graduate studies completed under the previous law with the GPA of at least 8 (eight). The University Senate announces application for admission of candidates in the first year of studies, based on the recommendation from the Council for University Studies.

The admission to the PhD programme Intelligent Systems requires fluent knowledge of English language. The type of knowledge, aptitude and skills that are checked in the enrolment and the way these checks are done are published in the application. The other facts related to the conditions of admission to the doctoral studies are defined by the act of doctoral studies, in accordance with the Statute of the University of Belgrade.

The students’ rank in admission is determined on the basis of their GPA achieved in the previously completed study programmes and duration of studies, and complies with the number of candidates in the established enrolment quota.
