Biophotonics

University of Belgrade

Level:  doctoral academic studies
Upon end of the studies student will receive a title: Ph.d. Biophotonics
This program leads to the acquisition of scientific name Ph.D. in - Biophotonics. The study program lasts three years or six semesters, and has a total volume of 180 ECTS. The program consists of compulsory subjects and two blocks of eight elective courses (block B) and 6 elective courses (block C), of which the student chooses three subjects from block B and two subjects from block V. The first three semesters are dedicated to teaching and beginning work on his doctoral dissertation. It is mandatory that a student pass 8 exams totaling 78 ECTS. Special course of biophotonics (22 ECTS) following the compulsory subjects and passed all the elective courses envisaged by the plan. The program is modular and individually adapted to the theme of the doctoral thesis, selected in accordance with mentors and approved by the Program Committee of biophotonics. Special course consists of 3 modules: Introduction to scientific research (2 ECTS), Work which explains in detail the proposal and the dissertation (10 ECTS), Defending labor under b. before the Commission of the Programme Council of Biophotonics (10 ECTS). Preparing for a doctoral dissertation is done in the third, and the dissertation itself IV, V and VI semester, after the exams and the Special Course. Doctoral dissertation carries 80 ECTS. Public defense of the doctoral dissertation is possible when the candidate furnishes proof that at least two papers accepted for publication in international scientific journals with SCI, and the results that have been the primary theme of the dissertation.

Goals of study program

The program is organized with the aim that students work on projects and assumes intensive research work. The program ensures that all participants have a strong multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach to studies, and the acquisition of practical and theoretical knowledge which qualify them to deal with future scientific research both in the field of fundamental research in biophotonics and the translation of that knowledge in other areas (primarily biomedicine).

Outcome of study program

Students who complete the program in Biophotonics are becoming prepared for the research, development of new methods, work in a multidisciplinary team and to be able to translate basic research results primarily in biomedicine, such as neuroscience, designing new drugs, other therapies (primarily cancer) and participation the increasing global database (bioinformatics). On the other hand, the program is primarily focused on exploring experimental techniques and computational models that can be applied in more or less in all research related to biological systems (including, for example, ecology, genetics, development of new instruments, etc.). The students in theoretical and practical terms familiar with modern methods of optical and laser microscopy, ways to manipulate biomaterials using laser light. Competence to work and the use of modern devices and systems in biomedicine, makes doctors biophotonics interesting for companies that develop a wide range of biological and medical optical devices.
